The film “mutterseelenallein” portrays with painful precision the situation of a woman who learns that her son is the prime suspect in the case of a murdered girl. Her first spontaneous reaction is to reject the terrible notion completely, but within a matter of days she comes to accept that her son really is suspected of this dreadful crime. She alternates between agonising emotions of despair, hope, helplessness and confidence. Bea, the female lead, experiences all the extreme forms of human behaviour and is left on the margin of society. By the end of the story Bea has become aware of her own failings, her own guilt – and yet she is naturally unable to change the terrible events that have taken place. There are truths bigger than ourselves and agonies that time can never heal. How can a person live with this? The film leaves the viewer to ponder this haunting question. “Mutterseelenallein” is the first cinema film by Bernd Böhlich, who has directed TV events including “Sturmzeit“ and “Der Verleger“as well as winning the Grimme Prize for both “Landschaft mit Dornen“and “Totes Gleis“.
